The primary role of the SMS Officer is to manage safety risk and assuring the effectiveness of safety risk controls in Punta Arenas, Chile. The SMS Officer works closely with our other SMS Officer and reports directly to the Punta Arenas Air Operations Manager.Antarctic Logistics & Expeditions (ALE) is the most experienced deep-field operator in Antarctica, providing a wide range of guided experiences, air support, logístical back-up and safety cover for governmental research programs, independent expeditions, and tourists. We work in a worldwide market of different cultures and languages, and we fully embrace this diversity. We also have a strong environmental ethic. ALE is a Utah company with a year-round office in Salt Lake City, a seasonal operations support office in Punta Arenas, Chile, and several seasonal field camps in Antarctica.**Seasonal Information**:The SMS Officer generally work from October to February.**Duties and Responsibilities**:- Maintain the SMS reporting system and related documentation (evidence of investigation, root cause analysis and audits of reported incidents/accidents and hazards). Conduct, as instructed, preliminary risk assessment of reported issues and take responsibility for accident-incident investigations. Help with all investigators and auditors through conduct of their work- Evaluate and report the results of investigations and implementation of corrective action in the context of organizational risk management strategies; evaluate effectiveness of treatment of SMS-reported issues- Help in Monitoring and analyzing trends in safety performance- Ensure compliance with all local and international regulatory requirements related to aviation safety management- Help conducting of investigations of safety-related incidents/accidents and hazards as required- Help conducting audits on the effectiveness of corrective actions taken to remedy safety incidents/accidents and hazards as required- Contribute to management review of the Safety Management System- Manage, as instructed, SMS and associated training of employees and contract staff- Develop and disseminate safety-related documentation including monthly status reports, meeting minutes, SMS newsletter, safety articles- Perform company safety surveys and analysis of survey results- Maintain strict confidentiality of organizational safety reporting systems and/or accident-incident records- Deal with local Health, Safety and Environmental authorities as requested and keeping all the necessary paperwork/documentation up to date- Other duties as assigned**Required Skills and Abilities**:- Ability to work as part of a team to complete tasks.- Ability to stay positive while working holidays or long varied hours while under pressure- Ability to perform a physically demanding role- Be safety and security minded at all times- Excellent health, safety, and risk management skills.**Minimum Qualifications**:Must have an A, B, and D Driver's License and a Safety Management System certificate, training, or other qualification, and have the ability to secure and maintain restricted airport security clearance.Preferred qualifications include previous SMS and airport work experience, dangerous goods certification, dangerous goods driver's license certification, competent with technology, and know basic written and spoken English and Spanish.**Classification**:This position is a seasonal role.**Physical Requirements**:This position involves medium work that primarily involves standing or moving for long periods of time. This position may exert up to 55 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 40 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.Incumbents in this role typically require standing or moving for prolonged periods, being around aircraft and machinery, communicating with others to exchange information, repeating motions that may include wrists, hands and/or fingers, assessing the accuracy, neatness and thoroughness of the work assigned.**COVID Vaccine Requirement**:In accordance with international travel regulations, all staff that are working or may be traveling to Chile or Antarctica must be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 (SARS-COV-2).
